The Bethpage Fire Department Technical Rescue Team was formed in 1993. The team
was originally formed with thirteen members. These charter members were picked for
their expertise from various fields of job skills. Carpenters, electricians, riggers iron workers, plumbers, medics, mechanics etc. Their individual skills presented a good start for the team. During the next few years members had to undergo extensive training in all fields of technical rescue. Trench Rescue, Building Collapse, Confined Space, High Angle, Ropes and Rigging, Water and Ice Emergencies, Breaching and Breaking just to name a few. Members attended schools and classes from Harrisburg Community College to New York State Fire Academy (Montour Falls), Roco Rescue, Maryland State Fire Academy and many more.
Since the teams inception we have responded to many Specialized Rescues all over Nassau and Suffolk Counties. We have operated at a water tower rescue, Wall collapses, Building collapses, Explosions, Vehicles into buildings, Cesspool incidents, Confined Space incidents, Trench Rescues and many other interesting and challenging incidents. Presently the team operates with 20 Rescue Specialists and 15 Support team members. The team responds with R-3 and 9011 Technical Rescue Truck to all incidents. The team is presently run with the coordination of 2 team leaders and members from the entire department.
